Psalms 44

Former Times of Help and Present Troubles.

For the music director. A
Possibly Contemplative; or Didactic; or Skillful Psalm
Maskil of the sons of Korah.

1 God, we have heard with our ears,
Our bfathers have told us
The cwork that You did in their days,
In the ddays of old.
2 You with Your own hand edrove out the nations;
Then You fplanted them;
You gafflicted the peoples,
Then You hlet them go free.
3 For by their own sword they idid not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your jarm and the klight of Your presence,
For You lfavored them.

4 You are mmy King, God;
nCommand
Lit salvation
victories for Jacob.
5 Through You we will ppush back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will qtrample down those who rise up against us.
6 For I will rnot trust in my bow,
Nor will my sword save me.
7 But You shave saved us from our adversaries,
And You have tput to shame those who hate us.
8 In God we have uboasted all day long,
And we will vgive thanks to Your name forever. Selah

9 Yet You whave rejected us and brought us to xdishonor,
And ydo not go out with our armies.
10 You cause us to zturn back from the enemy;
And those who hate us aahave taken spoils for themselves.
11 You turn us over
Lit for food
to be eaten like acsheep,
And have adscattered us among the nations.
12 You aesell Your people
Lit for no wealth
cheaply,
And have not
Or set a high price on them
profited by their sale.
13 You make us an object of ahreproach to our neighbors,
Of scoffing and airidicule to those around us.
14 You make us aja proverb among the nations,
A
Lit shaking of the head
,
allaughingstock among the peoples.
15 All day long my dishonor is before me
And
Lit the shame of my face has covered me
I am covered with my anhumiliation,
16 Because of the voice of one who aotaunts and reviles,
Because of the presence of the apenemy and the avenger.

17 All this has come upon us, but we have aqnot forgotten You,
And we have not ardealt falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not asturned back,
And our steps athave not deviated from Your way,
19 Yet You have aucrushed us in a place of avjackals
And covered us with
Or the shadow of death
,
axdeep darkness.

20 If we had ayforgotten the name of our God
Or extended our
Lit palms
hands to baa strange god,
21 Would God not bbfind this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 But bcfor Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are regarded as bdsheep to be slaughtered.
23 beWake Yourself up, why bfdo You sleep, Lord?
Awake, bgdo not reject us forever.
24 Why do You bhhide Your face
And biforget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our bjsouls have sunk down into the dust;
Our bodies cling to the earth.
26 bkRise up, be our help,
And blredeem us because of Your mercy.
